❌Deadline Misses and Recommendations: GAO Highlights AI Management Challenges in Federal Agencies
Hello there, AI enthusiasts! 🤖 Prepare for an adventure into the marvels of modern technology! 💻 Look out for enthralling discoveries and advancements in the realm of artificial intelligence 🦾, spiced up with a touch of creativity 🎨 and wit 😄.
📰WHAT’S NEW!
Intel introduced Gaudi3, a new artificial intelligence chip designed for generative AI software, set to launch next year, competing with Nvidia and AMD in the AI hardware market.
The announcement reflects the ongoing competition among chipmakers to challenge Nvidia's dominance in providing GPUs for major AI models like OpenAI's ChatGPT, impacting stock performances.
Alongside Gaudi3, Intel revealed Core Ultra processors for AI-focused PCs and laptops, featuring NPUs for faster AI processing, demonstrating a broader strategy to tap into the growing demand for AI-centric
Several federal agencies are falling behind on deadlines and initiatives to enhance their management of artificial intelligence, according to a recent Government Accountability Office (GAO) report.
Despite initial steps, key efforts to strengthen AI management have missed deadlines. The GAO report issues dozens of recommendations to 19 agencies, emphasizing the need for compliance with federally mandated requirements, including developing plans, maintaining inventories, and issuing guidance on AI usage.
The report reveals that 20 out of 23 agencies reported approximately 1,200 current or planned challenges/opportunities that AI could address, such as border camera analysis and drone image interpretation. However, data inconsistencies and incomplete inventories pose challenges to effective AI management.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk participated in the Italian "Atreju" political conference, covering topics such as artificial intelligence (AI), falling birth rates, immigration, and more.
Musk highlighted the potential risks and benefits of AI, describing it as a "double-edged sword" but emphasizing its transformative potential for abundance in goods and services. He stressed the need for regulatory oversight to ensure the positive outcomes of AI development.
The interview is part of Musk's ongoing discussions with world leaders on various themes, including AI, birth rates, and immigration. Musk has engaged with leaders from Hungary, Turkey, Israel, Thailand, and others, addressing population challenges and related issues.
The Department of Energy (DOE) unveiled a new office to coordinate research on artificial intelligence (AI) applications in the energy, defense, and health sectors, following President Joe Biden's executive order in October.
The office is tasked with developing AI and other emerging technologies to address climate-related risks, promote clean-energy deployment, and enhance grid reliability. AI, biotechnology, quantum computing, and semiconductors will be the focus areas, aiming to lead in exploring technological frontiers.
The move recognizes the potential benefits of AI in areas like emission reduction, utility sectors, and infrastructure assessment using AI-run drones. However, concerns about risks to American privacy, misinformation, and job availability accompany the acknowledgment of AI's potential.
During his annual phone-in and end-of-year news conference, Russian President Vladimir Putin faced a question from what appeared to be an AI-generated "deepfake" of himself, asking about the dangers of neural networks and artificial intelligence.
The AI question, posed by an entity resembling Putin, sparked laughter from the audience and a momentary pause from the president. The questioner, claiming to be a student from St Petersburg Institute, queried Putin on his attitude towards the risks associated with neural networks and AI.
Only three states, Minnesota, Michigan, and Washington, enacted laws related to AI and deepfakes in political campaigns in 2023, despite the increasing size, scale, and potential threats posed by these technologies.
States face challenges in regulating AI and deepfakes, including First Amendment considerations, fast-paced technological advancements, and limited understanding among lawmakers. Proponents emphasize the urgency for states to act independently, offering varied approaches that can inform effective policy.
The federal government has made incremental moves, with President Biden issuing an executive order and the Federal Election Commission initiating efforts, but comprehensive federal legislation remains absent. State-level action becomes crucial as the 2024 election approaches, with concerns about the potential impact of deepfakes on political disinformation.
