📰WHAT’S NEW!

  • A US court has ruled that AI-generated artwork cannot be copyrighted. The judge ruled that copyright law requires a "human author" and that AI-generated works do not meet this requirement.

  • The ruling was made in a case brought by Stephen Thaler, who had tried to copyright an image created by his Creativity Machine algorithm.

  • The judge cited past cases in which copyright was denied to works that were created without human input, such as a monkey selfie. She also noted that AI models are often trained on pre-existing work, which could raise questions about how much human input is necessary for a work to be considered "original" under copyright law.

  • China has launched a satellite with powerful AI at its core, called the WonderJourney-1A (WJ-1A). The satellite has an onboard intelligent processing unit known as the String Edge AI Platform, which allows it to perform real-time observation and processing.

  • It can analyse an area of 10,000 square kilometers (3,860 square miles) and realize dynamic object tracking in just a few hours.

  • The WJ-1A is still in the testing phase, but the company hopes to use it for a variety of applications, including environmental monitoring, disaster response, and crop planting.

  • The UK government is investing £100m to try to win a toe-hold in the global race to produce computer chips used to power artificial intelligence.

  • The funds will be used to order key components from major chipmakers Nvidia, AMD, and Intel. However, some experts believe that the £100m is too little, too late, and that the UK is at risk of being left behind in the AI chip race.
